Sheila is a Maxillofacial Surgeon by training and worked for many years as a
Head and Neck Oncology and Trauma NHS based surgeon. Given the impact of Head
and Neck Cancer on patients, exploration of quality of life issues and the way
we might meet patient need is essential to good clinical care and in 2000 Sheila
moved to Leeds to allow clinical academic work to become her main focus. Sheila's
other clinical research work looks at advanced diagnostic technology and new
biomaterials for reconstructive surgery, again with a focus on improving clinical
care.
Sheila chairs the NCRI Head and Neck CSG Survivorship subgroup which has a remit to develop clinical trials for this cancer site. Within the Psychosocial Oncology and Clinical Practice Research Group, Sheila is undertaking a study exploring patient and clinician views on quality of life assessment in clinic with the aim of developing a tool for communication between patients and members of the multidisciplinary cancer team. Having had an active clinical career for many years, Sheila considers herself comparatively new to research and this study should form the core of my PhD. Sheila's team was successful in gaining funding in a competitive bidding round from Macmillan Cancer Support for a User-led research study 'Home But Not Alone' which will explore whether User-mentors can assist patients in the period immediately after discharge home. If this initiative is successful Sheila's team plan to put together a tool to train User-mentors as part of the clinical team. Sheila is a Co-Investigator in a number of national studies in the Head and Neck field and her main aim is to expand clinical research in this area. Quality of life research lies at the core of this activity and she is building collaborations especially with Bradford to try to bring together interested clinicians and researchers. |
